My flight ✈️ thoughts & processes

Writer: Andrea RichardsonAndrea Richardson

I have flight anxiety really bad.

Didn't realize it until my first flight from STL to CALI back in 2009.

Before I took this trip to ATL, I knew I'd have to figure out how to calm my anxiety as best as I could.

My flight anxiety looks like:

-being sensitive to the plane ✈️ sounds during take off

-fear taking over when the plane moves ascends and descends

-freaking out when turbulence 🫨 comes (even what I like to call "soft" turbulence

-Fear of being being out of control

Once we are in the air, I'm feeling okay, for the most part

But even as I plan my trip, I think about ways to stay calm or distract myself on the plane ✈️ It looks like:

-Picking a song 🎧 to listen to on full blast as we ascend (Anthony David and Algebra B's rendition of "Heaven". Listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRQYrjq1jD8

-Writing in my journal (I actually love my 💭 thoughts while I'm in the clouds)

-Deep breathing 😮‍💨

-Chanting a quote by Audre Lorde: I am deliberate and afraid of nothing (From her 1970's poem 'New Year's Day')

One this flight back from ATL, I definitely wrote my chant over and over again.
